Where is the next generation of fashion designers coming from?

Maybe your home.

FashionPlaytes.com allows girls to flex their burgeoning fashionista muscles by choosing a basic garment (dress, T-shirt, hoodie, pants) and then add her own flavor by selecting the color, ribbons, appliques, rhinestones, ruffles or buttons. She can even have an avatar at the website “model” her creations.

Then she either saves the look in her Wish List file or sends it in for construction. Before you can say “Tim Gunn,” the outfit is shipped to your home within 2 to 3 weeks.

“I found it because she was always creating her own outfits,” said Weston, Fla., mom Lori Lipkin about her daughter Sabrina. “She was always talking about designers and clothes.”

So a Hanukkah gift later, nine-year-old Sabrina was not only designing for herself, but making “twin” outfits for her Teddy Bear.

“I would like to be a designer one day because it’s a lot of fun to be able to wear your own clothes and you can be really proud when someone compliments your clothes,” said Sabrina.

Lisa Shaw, also a Weston mom, said her daughter Ava got FashionPlaytes.com gift certificates from an uncle and aunt for her sixth birthday in November.

“I tell you, that fashion gene skips a generation. Her grandmother loves to shop and loves fashion too, but I’m too busy,” she said before adding, “Ava’s big thing now is dressing up to go to church.”

Ava’s other big thing is autonomy.

“I like it because you design your own clothes and you get the colors you want to use,” she said.

T-shirts are $14 and $15. Rompers are $18. Dresses are $14-$24. Skirts are $9.99 to $11.99. Leggings are $12 while jeggings are $25.

While FashionPlaytes.com is getting all the media attention, there are other similar sites such as ByKidsOnly.com and Nintendo has a game for designing jewelry called Style Lab Jewelry Design (http://www.nintendo.com/games/detail/Z1WviszJBU2gSElB9SnjapxGF1afsM6C)

FOR OLDER TEENS AND ADULTS

Those sites are for tweens and younger. For the older designer under your roof, there are some other options such as:

IndiCustom.com – a site for designing your own jeans.

SpreadShirt.com – you can upload a jpeg image and put it on a T-shirt if you like. Other T-shirts sites are Zazzle.com and CustomInk.com.

FabricOnDemand.com – allows you to come up with your very own textiles and materials.

Fabricly.com – submit your sketches via email and the design “team” checks out your designs and selects which designers the site wants to promote.

Garmz.com – upload your design and the online community takes a vote. If you win, your garment gets produced and sold in the Garmz online store.

Blank-Label.com – allows guys to design their own shirt. Dude designers should also check out WorldOfAlfa.com, ShirtsMyWay.com and ProperCloth.com for custom shirt designing. If you want an Italian-made shirt personalized by yourself, then try NeroNote.com. Or if you can read German, then give YouTailor.com a try. The Brits are in the game too with iTailor.com.
